Plumbing: do-it-yourself hazards and disasters

"How complicated can it be?". If you're asking yourself this question when faced with a leaky faucet or any other minor plumbing problem, then it's probably time to call a professional plumber.

There's a reason plumbers go through a lengthy apprenticeship and must have professional certificates of qualification to practice their trade. Plumbing is much more complex than you might think, and there are countless dangers and disasters that await you if you try to do it yourself with faulty plumbing.

From faucet repair...

"What can go wrong?". Here's another question that DIYers ask themselves regularly. At best, you'll spend hours doing a job that a plumber can do in minutes. At worst, your efforts could make the problem worse rather than better and you could even create a health hazard.

For example, take that leaky faucet. Replacing the seals is one of the safest things you could do, but there are many things that can go wrong. After turning off the water, you'll need to remove several components from your faucet. Do you have all the tools you need to remove and replace these components? What do you do if one of them gets stuck? Which of these parts need to be replaced?

While thinking about these questions, you go to your local hardware store to buy replacement parts, hoping that the salespeople will be able to help you. They will certainly do their best and hopefully have the necessary replacement parts. If not, you'll buy a new gasket only to find out when you replace it that the problem wasn't with it, or that your hardware store doesn't have the necessary component in stock.

The "best case scenario" is that after hours of work, you will have successfully fixed your leak. In the worst-case scenario, you will end up calling an emergency plumber.

... To Pipe Repair

When it comes to plumbing, things start to get dangerous. There are countless cases where homeowners, discover a leak in a buried pipe, take a shovel, dig and damage a pipe. At best, it's an inlet pipe and they spray themselves with clean water, the unluckiest will get sewage.

If they are able to identify the source of the leak, without creating a new one, the more knowledgeable will call a plumber immediately.

Your heating system

Similarly, if you are a novice, never consider doing any DIY work that involves your hot water system, as you risk mixing water with electricity. The slightest mistake can be fatal. The same is true for gas heating systems. That's why plumbers and heating engineers are the only ones authorized to work on this type of installation.
